You may know that I ran a side business a few years ago [some of my work] and every time I had an order for a cake I had cake scraps. Now I always just turned those scraps [with leftover frosting] into what I called Cake Balls.
My husband and friends always joked about the name...
My Cake Balls were literally what ever left overs I had: mixed together, rolled into balls and then dipped in chocolate. I never thought to put them on a stick and call them a POP.... if I had I'd probably be a rich lady by now but I didn't... anyway... my friends and family LOVED THEM.
Fast forward to life now.. I'm started to make cakes again, which means I have cake scraps... and what else would I do? Make cake balls...
Since I've been blogging, I've seen the talent of amazing people all over the place making some pretty awesome Cake Pops.
For example these colorful guys:
Bakerella she's simply AMAZING at these! |
I thought hey "I can do that"....
Um nope I couldn't.
I followed tips on putting the cake balls onto sticks but it just didn't work. As soon as I dipped them into the candy melts they would fall off.
Every Time I tried.
I attempted Cake Pops a few more times with the same result.
I had almost given up... until this weekend.
tada! |
They actually stayed on the stick!!! I was SUPER thrilled. I may have squealed and then jumped for joy.
I figured out what I was doing wrong. I was using WAY too much frosting.
I can't even tell you what the ratio is because every cake is different [I didn't use a box cake] so my best suggestion if you are having my problem... start mixing your cake [I used a hand mixer] before you add any frosting and then add only a small amount at a time.
Oh and my other tip, keep trying. I probably attempted the Pop part about 4 separate times [all different cake "doughs"] before I got it right. But now that I have a feel for the consistency of the pop "dough" I know what I'm looking for.
Shaping cake pops into perfect round balls that are all even is almost impossible! I was so stinking sick of rolling these guys, and I didn't even make that many.
I came across The Best Cake Pops and their easy roller..... I was immediately jealous.
I want that roller!
Watch this video and you'll see what I'm talking about:
How awesome was that, in less than 3 minutes you have 21 perfectly shaped cake balls!!!
Now that I know how to make the cake stay on the stick I'm going to be making these way more. I can't wait! :)
So tell me have you tried to make Cake Pops before? Did you have my problem? Do you hate rolling them as much as I do?
Or are you like my husband and just want to eat them?
I'd love to hear your experiences!

Your cake balls are amazing.. and so are you! Good job!
ReplyDeleteThank you Amanda, you are too sweet.
DeleteLove the cake balls so glad you finally mastered it....great job....
ReplyDeleteThank you, I'm happy I've finally got it too!
DeleteAwesome job! Yep, that's the key! When I made them for Lucas' bday I used only a tablespoon of frosting for the entire crumbled cake.
ReplyDeleteThanks Erica, I remember your Cake Pops were amazing! I should have just asked you! Haha! :)
DeleteWOW!!! These are the best cake pops I have ever had!! Supremely Delicious!! I am so glad that I snagged one when I did because they went fast!!! MMMMM YUM!!! When can I have more???
ReplyDeleteSandra you can have more with the next cake I make!
DeleteThank you!
If the cake is moist enough you use barely any frosting !
ReplyDeleteAgreed! Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteGood to know about the frosting! I have wanted to try making these. Cake should never be wasted!
ReplyDeleteI agree cake is too yummy to waste. If you make them let me know how it goes. Thanks for stopping by Kate.
DeleteI've done cake pops twice and the first time was a disaster. The second time I used less frosting, and put the sticks in and used melted chocolate to harden first before I dipped the rest of the pops in the chocolate. That worked much better. Great now I need cake!
ReplyDeleteI knew to dip in chocolate first but even with that too much frosting makes them fall off in the candy melts. Thanks for sharing Tracey.
DeleteI am like your husband, I just want to eat these. Like Macklemore said "THIS IS F'ING AWESOOOOMMME!"
ReplyDeleteHaha, thanks for stopping by InspectorJoe.
DeleteI can see why you would want that roller it would save so much time
ReplyDeleteIt really would! I want one! Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteLooks yummy...great job!
ReplyDeleteThank you mommyiannessa!
DeleteI love the idea of using leftover cake scraps! I always hated wasting them and couldn't eat them all. I have to try this.
ReplyDeleteMy husband loves it when I make cake [for orders] just for this reason. He gets so mad when theres no scraps! Let me know if you try making them! Just remember add tiny amounts of frosting at a time! Thanks for stopping by Rebecca.
DeleteI love eating cake pops and have always wanted to make my own, but they have seemed too difficult. I could never figure out how to form perfect balls so I became discouraged. Now that I know about the roller and the trick with the frosting, I'm inspired to start baking. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYou can do it! Let me know if you end of making some, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks for stopping by Kathryn.
DeleteYum, they look delicious!! Seems like sooo much work though. My Mother-in-Law said she dips the sticks in the candy melt first and then sticks the dough balls on the stick. I guess that makes them stick pretty good, too.
ReplyDeleteThey can be a little time consuming, I think having that easy roller would make them way easier though. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteThis was super helpful! I've been wanting to make these, but didn't know where to start. Thanks for the tips!!
ReplyDeleteHappy to share my experiences, let me know if you end up making some and thank you for stopping by!
DeleteA friend brought some of these into work and they were gone within 20 minutes. They were awesome. Thanks for showing us how to make great balls.
ReplyDeleteIn my experience Cake Pops always go fast! Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteI've found that cake pops are an art, they take practice and patience. The more you make then the better you'll get.
ReplyDeleteThank you Karen, I hope to make these more often!

DeleteSome times I don't even use cake, just oreos and cream cheese. Can't wait to see your next creations.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of that... I'll have to try those out soon. Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteI've never seen that roller before, it looks like it would be a huge help. I don't make Cake Pops often because I don't like rolling them. Thank you for sharing that video.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, I think I'd be making way more Cake Pops if I had one! Thank you for stopping by Lisa.
