DIY Tuesday [Piranha Plants]

Today I'm sharing how to make these super fun Piranha Plants from the Super Mario Brothers video game. They were a great addition to the surprise 30th birthday I worked on. They turned out super cute and they don't require a lot of effort.

Here's what you'll need:

Materials
Expanding foam sealer
White Felt
Foam Balls
PVC 4" X 2'
PVC 1" X 2'
PVC Cutter [Optional]
Red Spray Paint
Hot Glue & Gun
Green Duck Tape
Scissors
Saw

Start by cutting a mouth in your foam ball, it will look like pac-man. Make 2 [or however many you want as centerpieces]

Next you'll spray paint them red. Allow to dry for a long time. I personally allowed 24 hours. Foam does not dry as fast as other items so just keep that in mind when painting them.

You'll need to trim down your PVC, for the 1" pipe we used a pvc cutter and the large pipe my husband used an electric saw.

The base of the plant is 12" tall
The stem of the plant is 7" tall with 2" sealed in foam

To ensure stability we used the expanding foam sealer to fill the pvc...  spray at the bottom of your "base" pvc and let that expand for about 45 minutes.

After that has expanded to where you have about 2" from the top place your "stem" pvc and spray more foam. Make sure you spray all the way around the pvc and inside the stem as well. We used scrap pieces of wood to hold the "stem" in place while the foam expanded.

After the foam has completely expanded saw off any excess. Ours needed to be trimmed a little above and below the base.

Next you'll cover pvc in duck tape... I recommend going slow and steady. I applied tape to the stems first..

Then I covered the bottom of the stem and the top of the base.

Then apply tape going up the base. I made sure to stop and start my pieces of tape in the same spot so there was a front side and a back side to these.

Completed Base

For the extra pipe look; I simply used a few sheets of paper towels folded in half then taped to the base.

For the top of the plant:

Cut your felt into:
strips about 2-3" wide
8-1" circles
8 Triangles [for teeth]
Roll 4 Paper Towels into tubes

Glue the teeth around the mouth of the plant.

To make the lips take your paper towel tube and wrap it in felt.

Hot glue lips to edge of mouth, make sure the lips touch on both sides. I had one pair of lips longer than the other. As you can see in the picture below:

Hot glue your circles to the sides and under part of the ball. [no picture]

Apply hot glue to the top of the stem and attach plant.

For the leaves, I just took a strip of duck tape about 8" long and folded it in half. Then Cut a leaf shape. I repeated for all four of the leaves.

Then I just duck taped them to the stem.

All Finished!!!

To make purchasing supplies easier I've provided links to shop online through Amazon.

I'm a huge Amazon fan and personally purchase supplies from them often. I can't always run errands so I find that Amazon makes my life easier.
